TDSO Partners with British Council to Transform English Teacher Education in Cambodia

We are delighted to announce that TDSO has entered into a significant cooperation with the British Council to strengthen English language teacher education across Cambodia.

About the British Council

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. Working in over 100 countries, they build connections, understanding, and trust between people through arts, education, and English language programmes. Their extensive expertise in teacher training, curriculum development, and capacity building in English language teaching makes them an ideal partner for our mission.

Our Partnership

This collaboration centres on the Community of Practice Leader Support Scheme, which aligns perfectly with the roll-out of TDSO’s teacher capacity development programme across the 18 provincial Teacher Education Centres in Cambodia. The programme will train Cambodian English language teacher educators to become effective community leaders, equipping them with advanced facilitation skills and collaborative problem-solving capabilities.

The programme will be accredited by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS). This accreditation will make this training an integrated part of the in-service teacher development programme (the TQU, Teacher Quality Upgrade programme) and will contribute significantly to teacher educator capacity building.

This initiative forms a crucial component of our strategic plan 2025-2030, which aims to strengthen teacher education across Cambodia. Through this partnership, we will:

  • Conduct comprehensive needs analysis to identify professional development requirements
  • Deliver structured leadership training for teacher educators
  • Establish sustainable Communities of Practice that will continue beyond the project period
  • Provide ongoing post-training mentorship to ensure successful implementation

Why This Partnership Matters for Cambodia

As TDSO, we recognise that Cambodia’s English language teaching sector requires sustained professional development support. By training teacher educators to become community leaders, this programme creates a multiplier effect—these leaders will subsequently support networks of English teachers across the country.

The focus on Communities of Practice ensures knowledge sharing and collaborative professional development continue long after formal training concludes. This approach builds local capacity whilst creating sustainable professional networks that align with our commitment to nationwide teacher development.

Our Vision

This cooperation represents a significant step in TDSO’s mission to support Cambodia’s educational development through practical, locally relevant professional development. The programme’s emphasis on community building and peer-to-peer learning aligns with proven models of effective teacher development.

We are excited to work alongside the British Council and the dedicated educators who will participate in this programme to strengthen English language teaching across Cambodia. This partnership enables us to extend our reach and impact as we work towards our 2025-2030 strategic goals.
