Cambodia faces a staggering educational deficit, with over 50% of children dropping out of school before age 12. The learning crisis runs even deeper: nearly 50% of children cannot read, and 75% lack basic maths skills at the end of primary school. The 2022 PISA results paint an even grimmer picture, ranking Cambodia’s youth last in reading and maths proficiency. This educational shortfall not only limits opportunities for youth but also significantly hinders national development.

The situation is even more dire regarding knowledge of a second language, further limiting Cambodian students’ ability to compete in an increasingly globalised world.

English proficiency is crucial for economic growth, access to higher education, technological advancement, and global competitiveness in our increasingly interconnected world. However, Cambodia’s English education lags far behind, creating a substantial barrier to progress. This language gap exacerbates existing socioeconomic disparities and limits Cambodia’s ability to engage with the global community fully, leaving students ill-prepared for a world where English is often a prerequisite for success.

TDSO, The Teacher Development Support Organization is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting teachers in Cambodia. Our core mission is to provide Teacher Training, focusing on CPD (Continuous Professional Development). A Language Centre supports our Teacher Training Centre.

We believe that every child has the right to high-quality education and to enjoy their childhood – to learn, play, make friends and grow up in a safe and happy environment. We strongly support the United Nations’ sustainable development goals and commit to contributing primarily to the goal of quality education: ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
